Ray Analysis

The seven rays are qualities that are expressed through humanity and are a key to understanding human nature. Knowledge of the seven rays is helpful in understanding those who are different from us, resulting in tolerance for the ideals and actions of others.
The purpose of Ray Analysis is to obtain information regarding the structure of the client’s personality and its relationship to the soul. The Ray Analysis aids in remedying spiritual problems so that the soul may express its purpose more fully in the life of the client. Alice Bailey described Ray Analysis as the basis for the soul-based psychotherapy for the Aquarian Age.
The rays are known by their number, 1-7, respectfully.
FIRST RAY
The first ray is will or power. The energy of the first ray is strong, direct, dynamic, and forward moving. Its piercing energy is symbolized by a lightning bolt. First ray qualities are associated with purpose and law. A first ray personality is purpose-driven, independent, assertive, persistent, pioneering, and fearless.
A first ray quality is to destroy that which is obsolete and needs to be replaced. First ray individuals manifest their dreams by using their intention and delegating tasks to others. Other first ray careers are the soldier, ruler, and explorer.
SECOND RAY
The second ray is love/wisdom. The energy of the second ray is expansive, emanating, and radiatory on one hand, and receptive, magnetic, and cohesive on the other hand. It is symbolized by the Sun or circle. The second ray has the qualities of attraction, inclusion, unifying, and nurturance. Jesus and Buddha were both second ray.
A second ray personality is serene, caring, understanding, empathetic, and patient. They are often teachers or in a healing profession. The second ray is represented by the scholar, the sage, and the reformer and lover of their fellow man. The 2nd ray and the 7th ray are the two main healing rays.
THIRD RAY
The third ray is active intelligence or adaptability. The third ray energy is weaving, rotary, versatile, and malleable. Qualities of the third ray are multiplicity, selectivity, activity, and adaptability. It is symbolized by the triangle.
The third ray personality is a creative thinker, a networker, and a skillful manipulator. They are resourceful, have good business acumen, and are easily able to learn foreign languages.
The third ray is referred to as “The Weaver” for the way it brings things together. Third ray vocations are the philosopher, ambassador, diplomat, chess player, economist, banker, or courtroom judge.
FOURTH RAY
The fourth ray is harmony through conflict. Its energy is associative, linking and integrating on the one hand, and oscillating or fluctuating on the other hand. The fourth ray is symbolized by the scales of justice, a pendulum, yin-yang, and a bridge or see-saw.
Fourth ray qualities include harmony, mixing, blending, linking equilibrium, peace, and meditation. However, fourth ray can also be demonstrative and dramatic. The fourth ray is associated with art, music, beauty, and aesthetics.
A fourth ray personality is colorful, unconventional, entertaining, artistic, and temperamental, understands the human condition, and can identify with differing perspectives. They could be a good interpreter.
The fourth ray is the bridge between life and form and is represented by the artist.
FIFTH RAY
The fifth ray is concrete knowledge or science. The fifth ray’s energy is separating, dissecting, and probing. It is left-brained, sequential, linear, and clarifying. The fifth ray is symbolized by a test tube, light bulb, computer, or laser-beam.
Fifth ray qualities are knowledge, specificity, discrimination, detachment, inquiry, and experimentation.
A fifth ray personality is logical, technical, practical, curious, and a problem solver. They will be inventive and an experimenter. The fifth ray individual would be best suited in a career as an engineer, chemist, or physicist. They may also be a mathematician or a lawyer.
SIXTH RAY
Ray six is that of devotion and idealism. Sixth ray energy is fiery, one-pointed and intense. Its uplifting energy moves forward and upward. It is symbolized by praying hands or a halo.
Qualities of the sixth ray are loyalty, faith, sacrifice, and mysticism. The sixth ray can include humility and optimism.
A sixth ray personality can be sincere, earnest, committed, a follower of a leader, dependent, uncompromising, and a martyr to a cause. There are two types of sixth ray personalities. There are the visionaries or militant leaders, who can be overbearing and filled with drive. This type of sixth ray has set its mark on human history, having produced the corrupt and awful story of man’s cruelty to man, as exemplified by the Crusades and then the Spanish Inquisition. We are leaving the sixth ray Piscean Age and have entered the seventh ray Aquarian Age.
Then there are the devotional followers and devoted servers, who are content to be passive and easily led. These sixth ray types are the saint, mystic, devotee, martyr, evangelist, server, and loyal friend.
SEVENTH RAY
The seventh ray is ritual, magic, and ceremonial order. The seventh ray energy is patterning, building, self-organizing, rhythmic, and cyclical. The seventh ray is symbolized by a magic wand, crystal, map, and compass.
Qualities of the seventh ray are transformation, manifestation, and systematizing. It is ritualistic and magical like a wizard. The seventh ray is represented by the Magician.
A seventh ray personality is structured, rigid, and makes a good organizer or manager. They are orderly and follow protocol and the letter of the law. They are uncomfortable with chaos and prefer ordered beauty.
FINAL THOUGHTS
For those who wish to study the rays in more detail, I recommend The Seven Human Temperaments by Geoffrey Hodson.
A “Ray Reading” describes which of the seven rays applies to a person’s physical body, emotional body, mental body, personality, soul, and monad, which is the soul group to which one belongs.
For the most part, I have been describing qualities associated with having a certain ray for the personality; however, there are specific characteristics that pertain to having a certain ray for each of the three bodies and soul.
People who do these readings can be found on the internet; however, there is value in attempting to determine your rays through introspection. This process will expedite you getting to “know yourself.”
EK and Ray Analysis
For each body, the ray which it is upon will have both positive strengths and negative weaknesses that could be worked upon. We know some of these from the comments made by the Tibetan Master, Djwal Khul, through Alice Bailey, regarding certain of the disciples. These are primarily found in Discipleship in the New Age and The Rays and the Initiations by Alice Bailey.
Muscle test and ask aloud, “The concept of the ray associated with ‘Client’s name’ physical body,” then touch diagram for each ray while naming 1st ray, 2nd ray, etc….., until a weakening of a previously strong muscle occurs. Then, while touching each ray’s diagram, move on to:
"The concept of the ray associated with:"
Client's Name | emotional body |
Client's Name | mental body |
Client's Name | personality |
Client's Name | soul |
Client's Name | monad |
The composite of the rays found for each of the 6 bodies is a Ray Analysis. Generally, if 3 or more of the 6 aspects of a client are on a single ray, then that is their primary ray. It can be helpful to have the personality and the soul be the same ray, as subjugating the personality to the soul is a prime directive in our time.
The second ray, love and wisdom, is the dominant ray for our time, as these qualities were developed by Christ and the Buddha. You could say we live in a second ray system, as our solar system is second ray.
